A talcum bottle knocked over with powder spilling out

An investigation into Johnson & Johnson’s talc-based baby powder products suggest the company may have targeted sales toward minority women. A recently revealed internal memo from the company discussed how Johnson & Johnson could increase profits by targeting African American and Hispanic women. This memo was uncovered during an investigation that revealed Johnson & Johnson knew about the potential contamination of cancer-causing substances within their product.

Details of the Johnson & Johnson Investigation

An internal memo on August 5, 1992, noted that Johnson & Johnson could increase its sales volume by targeting their baby powder product toward African American and Hispanic women. The document states that African American women had the highest usage rate of Johnson’s Baby Powder at 52 percent. Similarly, the memo reported that Hispanic women had the second-highest usage rate of 37.6 percent. In the same document, Johnson & Johnson officials mention the negative publicity the company’s baby powder product was receiving from the health community due to its potential link to cancer.

Ovarian Cancer and Damages

Almost 22,000 women have filed lawsuits against Johnson & Johnson over claims that the pharmaceutical company’s talcum-based baby powder contributed to the development of ovarian cancer. This includes a group of over twenty women who were awarded $2.2 billion in compensation after claiming that the asbestos in Johnson & Johnson talcum powder contributed to the development of ovarian cancer. Johnson & Johnson appealed this decision but was subsequently denied by the Missouri Court of Appeals, who cited Johnson & Johnson’s disregard for customer safety in their decision. In October 2020, Johnson & Johnson was ordered to pay $100 million to resolve over 1,000 lawsuits brought forth by women.
