Paragard is an intrauterine device, or IUD, used by many women as a long-term birth control method. Manufactured by Teva Pharmaceuticals, the T-shaped copper IUD is marketed to women as a small, hormone-free device that is both flexible and soft. However, this specific IUD has been connected with serious injuries and health complications, harming countless women across the country.
Since 2010, the FDA has received more than 1,600 adverse event reports from healthcare providers detailing issues or complications related to the Paragard IUD. Women have reported the IUD migrating from its intended position, the IUD breaking apart inside of them, or complications arising during the removal of the device. Many of these reports say that complications occurred years before the device’s 10-year intended lifespan.
Legal Action
Women who have had the Paragard IUD implanted may not have been informed of the issues or complications stemming from the use of this particular device. There are lawsuits currently pending that include the following complications:
- IUD breakage during removal
- Surgery following attempted IUD removal
- Scarring and damage to other organs
- Serious long-term infertility
- Ectopic pregnancies
- Hysterectomy
- Inflammation
- Infection
Unfortunately, the negligence from Teva Pharmaceuticals may have seriously impacted the lives of many who received the Paragard IUD. If these patients had been warned about the serious issues that could arise due to Paragard, they may have chosen another birth control option and avoided many painful and life-threatening complications from this medical device.
